The bathroom can be one funky place. While it’s often the one place we can escape to for respite, it’s also the dirtiest. The very nature of the bathroom lends itself to be one messy environment, and keeping it clean can be costly. What if I told you that you can make your own DIY bathroom cleaner on the cheap?
That’s right, it’s easy to reduce your cleaning costs by a wide margin. I’m going to teach you how to create your very own bathroom cleaning solutions using ingredients you likely already have in your home! Put an end to store runs and unnecessary spending by using these helpful tips and tricks!
DIY Bathroom Cleaner – Why Going All-Natural Is Just Plain Better
I’m going to be frank with you. Using store-bought cleaning chemicals are harmful to you and your family. Breathing in these dangerous toxins can lead to serious respiratory complications, or even worse.
My goal is to help you understand the things you should be avoiding, while teaching you how to make some great, all-natural, homemade bathroom cleaner solutions. Not only will you save money, but you will be protecting your family, as well.
If you still feel that you need a stronger toilet bowl cleaner after using my natural bathroom cleaner formulas, there are some safe and effective options you can buy that will get the job done.
So let’s first begin by discussing the dangerous toxins you should avoid when cleaning your bathroom. This is the first step in getting a safer, cleaner lavatory.

Avoid the Following Toxins:
Ammonium Chlorides
Do you or one of your family members have asthma? If so, you want to avoid ammonium chlorides like the plague. This is one of those chemicals that comes with a warning stating how harmful it is to humans.
That should be your first red flag. Not only does it damage your respiratory system, but it can even harm your reproductive system, as well! If that doesn’t dissuade you from using it, nothing will.
Now that’s some gnarly stuff. It’s certainly something you shouldn’t regularly clean your bathroom with, or anything else, for that matter. All the more reason to start using DIY bathroom cleaner formulas.
With the first vile chemical out of the way, let’s see what else might be lurking under your bathroom or kitchen sink. If you find that you own cleaning solutions containing any of these things, it’s best to pitch them and stick with a homemade cleaner.

Silicon Compounds
I want to be clear here. Silicon on its own isn’t inherently harmful. But when combined with cleaning agents and sold as a bathroom cleaner? Yeah, not good. Not good at all.
This is yet another chemical that is known to damage our reproductive system. It’s also quite harmful to growth and development, making this one chemical you definitely want to keep away from little ones.
You might find this chemical in shower cleaners and the like. Breathing it in proves to be problematic to our lungs, so making a homemade shower cleaner is most certainly the better option.
Need even more reason to start making your own DIY shower cleaner? Silicon compounds are terrible for the environment, particularly for the ocean and the life within it.
If you’re trying to do your part to ‘save the planet’, I’ll share a homemade daily shower cleaner momentarily that will help you do just that.
So, what’s next in our list of toxins to avoid? Can anything be worse than what we’ve already discussed?
Butoxydiglycol
With a name like “butoxydiglycol”, it can’t be good, right? This nasty compound affects our pulmonary system, making it difficult to breathe if inhaled.
Asthmatics will definitely want to steer clear of butoxydiglycol at all costs. Check your household cleaning products to see if this troublesome component is listed in the ingredients.
If you find anything containing it, toss it out, post-haste. You’ll be doing everyone in your house a favor – pets included!
Hydrochloric Acid
Most of us are familiar with this one. While it’s not the same human-melting hydrofluoric acid used in Breaking Bad, it’s still pretty, well, bad.
Hydrochloric acid is capable of dissolving metals, such as magnesium and zinc. It is very harmful to our skin, and quite damaging to our respiratory system.
Why anyone would want to clean their bathtub with this stuff is beyond me. Fortunately, I’m going to share some bathtub cleaning hacks with you shortly. Soon, you will be able to scrub your tub using safe, homemade formulas.
But first, let’s take a look at the final offender on our list of chemicals to avoid.
Fragrance
Most of us enjoy pleasant aromas. And because of that, it can be hard to tell what cleaning solutions are harmful from the ones that aren’t.
If you read the ingredients of your household cleaning solutions and find that ‘fragrance’ has been added, there’s a good chance that it is harmful to your respiratory system.
Once again, those with asthma or other breathing conditions will want to keep far away from anything with added fragrance. It can damage our lungs and make it hard to breathe.
Now that you have a good idea of what to avoid, let’s move on to the good part. In the following sections, I’m going to show you how easy it is to create your own bathroom cleaning solutions, including a DIY soap scum remover.
I’ll show you a natural shower cleaner that is both safe and effective. You won’t have to worry about breathing in these homemade remedies, as they are non-toxic and quite harmless.

This vinegar and water cleaning solution is a great way to quickly clean your shower and sink, hassle-free. Spray your shower and wipe it down for a sparkling shine.
Baking Soda + Salt + Washing Soda
For this recipe, the only thing you’ll probably have to buy is washing soda, as most people don’t keep this stuff in their homes. However, there is a way to turn baking soda into washing soda if you want to try your hand at it.
To make this powerful scouring solution, simply combine a cup of baking soda with a half cup of washing soda and pour it into a jar. Now, add in half a cup of salt (just make sure that it isn’t iodized).
Once you have mixed it well, sprinkle it in your tub or sink and allow it to sit for about 5 minutes or so. Then, just scrub it with a brush and wash away the solution. This makes a great DIY daily shower cleaner.

Essential Oils
Additionally, you may add your favorite essential oils to any of the homemade cleaners to make your bathroom more inviting.
